How to Add Humidity to a Room

Whether you live in a dry climate already or colder temperatures are leading to dry heat in your home, you may be thinking about how you can provide a more humid environment for your plants. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to show your plant babies a humidity boost! Believe us, your tropicals will love you for this as most naturally favor humid environments. Here are eight ways you can add humidity to a room:

1. Misting

Misting is a great option to add humidity. You can mist your plants several times a day, just be sure to use filtered water, or water that does not have chemicals in it (these can be removed by letting your water sit out overnight uncovered).

2. Bring them into the bathroom

Quick and easy, what better way to add humidity than to take your plants into a steamy shower with you!

3. Place them near a drying rack

Another simple method, if you use a drying rack for your clothes, wet laundry will release water vapor into the air as your clothes dry, creating humidity!

4. Pebble tray

Easy DIY to increase/boost humidity. To set up this method, get a tray that is slightly larger than the base of your plants current pot (if the base is 10” get a 12-13” tray). Put clean pebbles into the tray and fill with water leaving the tops of the pebbles exposed. Then, place the plant on top of the pebbles. It is important that the tops of the pebbles are not covered with water as most plants do not want their roots to sit in water. Refill dish as needed.

5. Two pots

A similar thought process as to the pebble tray, find a pot that is slightly larger than the one your plant is currently in, making sure your plants current pot fits inside. Fill the gap between the two pots with spaghnum moss and soak the moss with water. The water will slowly evaporate and add humidity. Make sure both the inner and outer pots have drainage holes for this method.

6. Group your plants

Grouping plants together raises humidity levels. Think of it like how the temperature of a home rises when people get together (say 30 people instead of normally 4). Something similar happens with plants, except it’s humidity! (Psst, if you need more plants to group click here!)

7. Humidifier

A fairly obvious solution, depending on the humidifier you purchase they have lots of options that your plants will love!

8. Cover them in plastic

This is definitely not an attractive solution, but it will create a highly humid environment, so it is good if your plant is sensitive and needs this or is struggling over winter. It essentially creates a greenhouse environment for the plant. Using wood stakes will help keep the plastic propped up, off of the plant.

Bonus

In almost every care guide, we mention to keep your plant away from vents and drafty doors/windows. After working so hard to raise humidity levels definitely make sure you keep your plants away from these areas!
