Citronella Plant Care

Pelargonium citrosum ‘van Leenii’

Citronella plants thrive in six hours of full sunlight daily, but they can benefit from some afternoon shade, especially in southern growing zones. Finding the right balance of sunlight is crucial for their growth and mosquito-repelling properties.

For potted Citronella plants, regular watering throughout the growing season is essential. Check the top inch of soil regularly and water when it’s dry. In-ground plants, once established, require watering once every other week. While these plants are mildly drought-tolerant, garden-grown citronella plants may need increased watering if leaf tips and edges become brown and crispy.

The citronella plant is rated for Zones 9 to 11. Find your zone here

Citronella Plant FAQ

Caring for a Citronella plant involves providing it with the right amount of sunlight, regular watering, and occasional pruning to maintain its shape. Additionally, you can release the plant’s mosquito-repelling scent by gently rubbing its leaves.

Citronella is generally considered toxic for dogs. It’s advisable to monitor your pets and ensure they don’t ingest large quantities of the plant. Some dogs may be sensitive, so it’s best to consult with a veterinarian if you have concerns.

While Citronella is renowned for repelling mosquitoes, its effectiveness against flies may vary. The plant’s strong citrus aroma may have some deterrent effect on flies, but it might not be as potent as specific fly-repelling measures.

Citronella is not a true perennial in colder climates. It is often grown as an annual or brought indoors during the winter months. In warmer regions, where temperatures don’t drop significantly, it can exhibit perennial characteristics.

  5. Beautiful, leafy, fragrant plants! The planter pots are attractive, but they are plastic. Also, these plants should be repotted in much larger pots so they can spread out and establish themselves. I am very happy with my purchase.
