Crossandra Plant Care

 Crossandra infundibuliformis

The Crossandra Orange Marmalade plant flourishes when exposed to bright, indirect sunlight, making it an ideal choice for shaded garden spaces or indoor locations with sunny north or east-facing windows. Adequate artificial light can also cater to its light requirements, ensuring a vibrant display. During winter, it thrives when provided with ample indoor light. As a plant that dislikes direct sunlight, it showcases its best growth in well-lit yet sheltered environments.

To meet its moisture needs, the Crossandra prefers slightly moist soil, emphasizing the importance of avoiding waterlogged conditions. When grown outdoors, moderate watering on alternate days during the growing season maintains optimal soil moisture. Ensuring the soil never completely dries out is crucial. In winter, when grown as a perennial, reduce watering frequency to once a week. For indoor care, the same watering schedule applies, with a notable emphasis on using warm water to prevent shocking the roots. The Crossandra’s sensitivity to cold extends to its watering preferences, highlighting the need for a thoughtful and warm approach to its moisture requirements.

Crossandra Plant FAQ

Caring for Crossandra plants involves providing bright, indirect sunlight, making them suitable for shaded gardens or well-lit indoor spaces with sunny windows. Adequate watering is essential, ensuring the soil remains slightly moist but not waterlogged. Outdoors, moderate watering on alternate days during the growing season is recommended, reducing frequency to once a week in winter for perennial varieties. Indoors, the same schedule applies, with the added precaution of using warm water to prevent root shock.

Crossandra is typically grown as a perennial, particularly in regions with warm climates. As a resilient plant, it can endure and flourish across multiple growing seasons, showcasing its vibrant blooms consistently.

Crossandra plants are generally not attractive to deer, making them a deer-resistant option for gardens and landscapes. Their natural characteristics and foliage seem to deter deer from feeding on them.

The height of Crossandra plants can vary, but they typically grow to a moderate height, making them suitable for borders, containers, or as attractive ornamental additions to gardens.

  1. Magnificent Mussaenda plant so lovely (that I had already purchased five others from TPOF!! Laden with apricot colour blossoms every day, spring to fall. Glossy foliage that “garden bad guys” leave alone, Mussaenda is in a category all by itself. Pure heaven in a flowering plant!

  4. Our crossandra (in the middle) lost his flowers and leaves with the cold snap (but still hanging on). I’m planting them in the ground shortly. Super healthy, happy, large plants!
