Pink Hydrangea Plants FAQ

To care for hydrangea plants, provide them with well-draining soil and a location that receives morning sun and afternoon shade. Regular watering is crucial, especially during dry spells, to maintain consistent moisture. Applying a balanced fertilizer in spring supports healthy growth and abundant blooms. Mulch around the base of the hydrangea to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.

Pruning hydrangeas depends on the specific type. For varieties that bloom on old wood (e.g., Bigleaf or Oakleaf hydrangeas), prune right after flowering. For those that bloom on new wood (e.g., Panicle or Smooth hydrangeas), prune in late winter or early spring. Remove dead or weak wood and shape the plant as needed.

While hydrangeas are generally deer-resistant due to their toxic compounds, hungry deer may nibble on them during periods of food scarcity. Using deer repellents, creating physical barriers, or choosing deer-resistant varieties can help protect hydrangeas.

Adjusting the color of hydrangea blooms involves manipulating soil pH. For blue blooms, maintain acidic soil (pH 5.2-5.5), and for pink blooms, make the soil more alkaline (pH 6.0-6.2). Amendments like aluminum sulfate or lime can be added to alter soil pH and influence flower color.
