White Bird of Paradise Care

Strelitzia reginae

The White Bird of Paradise thrives when provided with bright light, including some direct sunlight, to promote optimal blooming. However, it’s crucial to shield the plant from the intense midday summer sun, especially for younger plants, as excessive exposure can lead to leaf burn. Ideal placements include rooms with windows facing east or west, ensuring a well-balanced exposure to sunlight while avoiding locations with only north-facing windows.

In terms of watering, maintaining consistently moist soil is essential throughout the year. While it’s important to avoid waterlogging, the plant’s large leaves contribute to increased moisture loss, necessitating daily watering during the spring and summer. When watering, ensure that the excess water drains from the drainage holes, preventing water accumulation in the saucer. Overwatering may result in crunchy brown leaves, while underwatering may cause the outer leaves to turn yellow. Finding the right balance in watering practices is key to fostering the health and vibrancy of the White Bird of Paradise.

The White Bird of Paradise plant is rated for Zones 10 to 12.

Not safe. White birds of paradise are toxic to pets.

Bird of Paradise Plant FAQ

The White Bird of Paradise plant requires specific care to thrive. It thrives in bright light, including some direct sunlight, making it essential to place it in a location with windows facing east or west. While it can tolerate some shade, it’s crucial to avoid direct midday summer sun, which can harm the leaves of younger plants. Consistent moisture is vital, especially during the spring and summer, with daily watering to prevent the soil from drying out. However, it’s important to avoid waterlogging, allowing excess water to drain from the drainage holes.

Regarding toxicity, it’s important to note that the White Bird of Paradise is considered toxic to cats.

Watering frequency is a crucial aspect of White Bird of Paradise care. During the spring and summer, daily watering is recommended to compensate for moisture loss through its large leaves. However, it’s essential to strike a balance, preventing overwatering, which can lead to crunchy brown leaves, and underwatering, which may cause yellowing of the outer leaves.

While the White Bird of Paradise prefers bright light, it can tolerate some shade. However, it’s important to find a balance, avoiding excessive shade that may result in sparse growth and less vibrant foliage. Striking the right balance in light exposure contributes to the overall health and well-being of the White Bird of Paradise.

  5. Plant survived a long 9 day journey to CA! Was packaged exceptionally well! Plant is large and beautiful. What I love about it is the balanced proportions of the leaves that fan out evenly. Seller responded to my question very quickly regarding the slight curling of leaves due to long transit, and how to care for the plant. Highly recommend this seller!!!
